Bend: A Sculptural Coffee Table with Fluid Lines

The inspiration behind the Bend coffee table was to create a 3-dimensional table from a 2-dimensional line design. Designer Jan Goderis wanted to transform a basic continuous line into a sculptural piece that incorporates essential elements of a coffee table without sacrificing aesthetics. The result is a table that engages with its surroundings and users, adding a touch of elegance to any space.

What sets the Bend coffee table apart is its construction. Made from two bent aluminum plates that fit together, the table exudes transparency and lightness. The plates extend all the way to the legs, creating vertical storage for magazines, newspapers, and other items. Additionally, there is storage space between the two top plates, offering even more functionality.

The realization of the Bend coffee table involves the use of pleated aluminum sheets for the lower and upper parts. These sheets are finished with a more environmentally friendly lacquering process. Oak wood slats are used to join the two aluminum plates together, ensuring a seamless and sturdy connection.

With dimensions of 125 x 55 x 28 cm, the Bend coffee table is designed to fit seamlessly into various living spaces. Its minimalistic design and functional features make it a versatile piece that can complement a range of interior styles.

Jan Goderis, the mastermind behind the Bend coffee table, embarked on this design journey in 2017 and finalized the project in 2022. The entire process took place in Ghent, Belgium, where Goderis meticulously researched and overcame various creative and technical challenges.

The Bend coffee table has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. In 2023, it was awarded the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
